The Century Ahead
Searching for Sustainability
Christi Electris, Paul D. Raskin, Richard A. Rosen
This paper explores the challenge of sustainable development by considering four contrasting global scenarios representing alternative worlds that might emerge from the turbulence and uncertainty of the present. This analysis reveals the risks of conventional development approaches and the real danger of socio-ecological descent. The paper underscores that a shift toward enhanced human well-being and environmental resilience remains an option, and identifies strategies and value changes for getting there. However, a fundamental shift from the current development paradigm is necessary if we wish to assure a sustainable future.
