This study addresses three broad areas of ESG investing activity by US colleges and universities: the incorporation of ESG criteria into endowment management; shareholder advocacy and active- ownership initiatives; and the governance and transparency of ESG investment decision-making. It also highlights the key role that stakeholder dynamics have played in the adoption of sustainable and responsible investing strategies, in contrast to other institutional investors.
